The low center is high desert, not quite 5, feet above sea level, covered by sagebrush or, in places, by nothing at all.   Well-traveled 19th-century explorer Ferdinand Hayden called Utah's vast Uinta Mountains—with their gorgeous pine forests, high-alpine meadows, and graceful symmetry—his favorite range. See why on the mile Highline Trail, which arrows right along the spine of the Uintas, seldom dipping below timberline as it traverses a range with more.

This study examined the effects of introduced grass seeding density and fertilizer on native species establishment on an oil drill pad site in the Uintah Mountains, UT. Differences in first-year seedling density and 3-year standing crop biomass among treatments were evaluated for seeded introduced grasses and native species and for unseeded colonizers.

The Uintah-Ouray Reservation in eastern Utah is the home of nearly three thousand members of the Northern Ute is the largest reservation in Utah, containing valuable timber, oil and gas, water, and other natural resources.
